Pharmacy Technician fills and labels patients' prescriptions under the supervision of a Pharmacist. May record details of, place orders for, take stock of, and store medications and medical supplies and deliver them to patients.
Pharmacy Technician may perform the following tasks:
- refer prescriptions to the pharmacist
- assist in the preparation of medicines
- select stock and attach dispensing and cautionary labels
- put medication into administration containers
- use computers for routine maintenance procedures
- carry out customer service duties, such as answering enquiries and advising customers on appropriate products for use in relation to certain health-related conditions
- operate cash registers.
This occupation belongs to Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) . STSOL consists of the list of the occupations which are high in demand in Australia. If you want to apply for Australia sponsored Permanent Residency (subclass 190) your occupation must be listed in the relevant STSOL list and you must have an invitation/sponsorship from the state government. This list is also a part of the Australia Point system. If eligible, you can live and work in Australia for an indefinite period of time.

Pharmacy Technician is classified as Group E occupations by Vetassess. The criteria for skills assessment of Group E occupations is to have Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Diploma level with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment completed in the last five years.
As stated on the website of Vetassess, a qualification at AQF Diploma level which is not in the highly relevant field together with an underpinning Certificate IV with a highly relevant major may be considered on a case-by-case basis to meet the educational requirements. In addition to this, applicants must hold at least three years of highly relevant employment in the last five years.
