Earth Science Technician collects and tests earth and water samples, records observations and analyses data in support of Geologists or Geophysicists.
Earth Science Technicians may perform the following tasks:
- order, check, pack and ship equipment and supplies for field surveys
- manage small field camps and, in some cases, cook for very small groups
- mark outlines of ore, waste and drillhole patterns in operating mines
- collect, record and transport samples of rock, soil, drill cuttings and water
- undertake geophysical surveys, involving the measurement of factors such as magnetism and gravity, and use global positioning systems (GPS) technology to establish deposit locations
- operate geophysical instruments to complete surveys that outline hidden rock features
- collate information collected from a range of sources (such as geochemical sampling surveys, seismic surveys and meteorological observations) and process the data using a computer
- use digital technology to produce geological and geophysical maps and sections
- supervise others carrying out these tasks.
This occupation belongs to Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) . STSOL consists of the list of the occupations which are high in demand in Australia. If you want to apply for Australia sponsored Permanent Residency (subclass 190) your occupation must be listed in the relevant STSOL list and you must have an invitation/sponsorship from the state government. This list is also a part of the Australia Point system. If eligible, you can live and work in Australia for an indefinite period of time.
