Cafe or Restaurant Manager organises and controls the operations of a cafe, restaurant or related establishment to provide dining and catering services.
Cafe or Restaurant Manager may perform the following tasks:
- planning menus in consultation with Chefs
- planning and organising special functions
- arranging the purchasing and pricing of goods according to budget
- maintaining records of stock levels and financial transactions
- ensuring dining facilities comply with health regulations and are clean, functional and of suitable appearance
- conferring with customers to assess their satisfaction with meals and service
- selecting, training and supervising waiting and kitchen staff
- may take reservations, greet guests and assist in taking orders
This occupation belongs to Short-term Skilled Occupation List (STSOL) . STSOL consists of the list of the occupations which are high in demand in Australia. If you want to apply for Australia sponsored Permanent Residency (subclass 190) your occupation must be listed in the relevant STSOL list and you must have an invitation/sponsorship from the state government. This list is also a part of the Australia Point system. If eligible, you can live and work in Australia for an indefinite period of time.

Cafe or Restaurant Manager is classified as Group C occupations by Vetassess. The criteria for skills assessment of Group C occupations are the following :
- Qualification(s) assessed at least AQF Diploma level with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at least AQF Diploma level with an additional qualification at least AQF Certificate IV in a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at least AQF Diploma level without a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years;
According to Vetassess, if you have pre-qualification employment and if all of your employment is before your qualification assessed at the AQF diploma level), three years of highly relevant employment in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment completed in the last five years..
As stated on the Vetassess website, in order to be considered as a Café or Restaurant Manager, the position must be responsible for every aspect of the café or restaurant's performance including the management of all employees and their occupational development, oversight of establishment operations, management of sales and profit targets, and participation in business planning. An acceptable café or restaurant setting would be one that provides food and beverage services for consumption on the premises. Customers can expect that food is typically prepared by chefs on the premises under the supervision of a chef and table service is provided. A diversity of dishes across a menu is generally provided by the café or restaurant. As stated in ANZSCO, Fast Food Managers are excluded from this occupation.
