Master Fisher controls a fishing vessel and fishing operations to catch and preserve fish, crustacea and molluscs. Registration or licensing is required.
Master fishers may perform the following tasks:
- direct fishing operations by using knowledge about the species sought, fishing grounds, seasons and the capabilities of the boat and the crew
- plot courses and work out positions using navigational aids
- operate radio, radar, sonar, echo sounder and other navigational and fishing aids
- check and interpret weather patterns and obtain radio weather forecasts
- use nets, lines, poles, pots and traps at varying depths to catch fish, molluscs and crustaceans
- supervise and assist crew in fishing operations and sorting, cleaning, preserving, stowing and refrigerating the catch
- record daily activities in ships' logs, keep accounts and maintain record of catch
- maintain safe operating conditions for crew, vessel and fishing equipment
- inspect vessels and gear to ensure they are maintained properly and oversee repair or replacement of defective items
- harvest shellfish from the seabed using towed dredges.

Master Fisher is classified as Group B occupations by Vetassess. The criteria for skills assessment of Group B occupations are the following :
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with an additional qualification at least Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma level in a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree without a highly relevant field of study and at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years;
According to Vetassess, if you have pre-qualification employment and if all of your employment is before your qualification assessed at the AQF bachelor degree level , you are required to have five years of highly relevant employment in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.
