Workplace Relations Adviser assists in resolving disputes by advising on workplace relations policies and problems, and representing industrial, commercial, union, employer or other parties in negotiations on rates of pay and conditions of employment.
Workplace relations officers may perform the following tasks:
- advise on the operation of industrial awards and agreements
- undertake negotiations on rates of pay and conditions of employment for employees and employers through enterprise bargaining negotiations
- represent employees or employers before workplace relations tribunals on matters such as enterprise bargaining agreements, disputes and termination of employment
- develop and administer policies on different employee classifications, wage structures and related matters
- establish and maintain good relationships between employers and employees
- examine and attempt to resolve workplace disputes and grievances (by acting as the management representative in discussions with trade unions about the effects of technological change on the duties of employees in a manufacturing workshop, for example)
- study and interpret relevant workplace relations legislation (the laws formulated by parliament to control industrial practices in the workplace)
- advise others on the proper procedures for carrying out negotiations and on the special regulations relating to employment and salary agreements
- conduct research into particular workplace relations issues (such as the effects of changes in work practices on productivity)
This occupation belongs to Regional Occupation List (ROL). Regional Occupation List consists of the list of the occupations which are high in demand in regional states and territories of Australia.

Workplace Relations Adviser is classified as Group B occupations by Vetassess. The criteria for skills assessment of Group B occupations are the following :
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with an additional qualification at least Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma level in a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree without a highly relevant field of study and at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years;
According to Vetassess, if you have pre-qualification employment and if all of your employment is before your qualification assessed at the AQF bachelor degree level , you are required to have five years of highly relevant employment in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.
