Mixed Livestock Farmer plans, organises, controls, coordinates and performs farming operations to breed and raise a variety of livestock
Mixed Livestock farmers may perform the following tasks:
- breed and raise livestock for the production of meat, wool, skins, milk, eggs and honey
- monitor and maintain the health of stock, providing pasture and fodder to maintain appropriate nutrition levels
- move or rotate stock to optimise feeding opportunities
- organise and conduct farming operations such as catching and loading livestock, shearing, milking and sterilising machines
- direct and oversee general farming activities such as fertilising, pest and weed control
- manage business capital, maintain and evaluate records of farming activities, monitor market activity and plan production accordingly
- organise the grading, sale, purchase and transportation of produce
- inspect and maintain farm buildings, fences, equipment and water supply systems
- recruit and coordinate farm workers and direct them on crop growing and livestock raising
- plan activities to minimise environmental degradation, monitor environmental effects of farming activities and repair existing damage through programs such as tree planting.
This occupation belongs to Regional Occupation List (ROL). Regional Occupation List consists of the list of the occupations which are high in demand in regional states and territories of Australia.

Mixed Livestock Farmer is classified as Group B occupations by Vetassess. The criteria for skills assessment of Group B occupations are the following :
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with an additional qualification at least Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma level in a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree without a highly relevant field of study and at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years;
According to Vetassess, if you have pre-qualification employment and if all of your employment is before your qualification assessed at the AQF bachelor degree level , you are required to have five years of highly relevant employment in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.
