Conservator plans and organises the conservation of materials and objects in libraries, archives, museums, art galleries and other institutions.
Conservators may perform the following tasks:
- examine and evaluate the condition of objects and confirm their identification and authenticity
- organise systematic inspection of collections and prepare written and photographic reports
- advise on the optimum storage and display conditions for the objects in their care (correct light, relative humidity, integrated pest management and temperature control, for example)
- advise on the correct methods for handling, storing, displaying and transporting works of art and artefacts
- conduct research into the material, technological or historical nature of collections, as well as materials and techniques critical for their preservation and sustainability
- undertake extensive research into deterioration problems within collections in order to inform collections management
- undertake conservation and restoration procedures to correct damage or control deterioration and record details of measures taken.

Conservator is classified as Group B occupations by Vetassess. The criteria for skills assessment of Group B occupations are the following :
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with a highly relevant field of study and at least one year of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree with an additional qualification at least Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Diploma level in a highly relevant field of study and at least two years of post qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years; Or
- Qualification(s) assessed at AQF Bachelor degree or higher degree without a highly relevant field of study and at least three years of post-qualification highly relevant employment in the last five years;
According to Vetassess, if you have pre-qualification employment and if all of your employment is before your qualification assessed at the AQF bachelor degree level , you are required to have five years of highly relevant employment in addition to at least one year of highly relevant employment at an appropriate skill level completed in the last five years.
