Commencement of Five Year Sponsored Parent Temporary Visa
The new subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa is now available which will allow grandparents or parents to visit their families in Australia
The new subclass 870 Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa allows grandparents or parents to visit their families in Australia and will cost $5,000 and $10,000 for a three-year and five-year visa respectively and will be subject to an annual cap of 15,000 visas being issued.
However a family can only sponsor one set of parents who must have their own health insurance and will be able to renew the visa only once, meaning parents are permitted to stay in Australia for a total of 10 years.
The new visa also will provide a pathway for existing Parent visa applicants to travel to Australia temporarily to spend time with their children and grandchildren while their permanent Parent visa application is being processed.
Eligibility of Parent
To be eligible for this visa the applicant must be the biological, adoptive or step-parent of the sponsor who must be an Australian Citizen, Australian permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
You as the applicant will need to meet eligibility criteria for the grant of this visa, in particular, that you are being sponsored by an approved parent sponsor and be outside of Australia for at least 90 days if you currently hold or have held a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) visa.
You will need to provide to the Department in your application evidence of access to funds and health insurance.
You will also need to satisfy the health and character and national security criteria.
Sponsor
The sponsor must first apply to be an approved sponsor and once approved will have 6 months to lodge a visa application.
You are not able to lodge this visa subclass until your sponsorship has been approved.
The sponsorship fee is currently $420
Both the sponsorship and the visa application must be lodged online through an IMMI account.
You are able to sponsor another/new parent to come to Australia but they too must meet the criteria as parents.
The sponsor will have to re-apply for a variation of the existing sponsorship and if there are two existing parents in Australia holding the subclass 870 visa the sponsor will need to withdraw the sponsorship for one parents and the parent must leave Australia or that parent apply for and be granted a different visa before a variation of the sponsorship can be lodged.
If you wish to sponsor two new parents then you will need to lodge a new sponsorship application.
When you speak with us we will outline for you the complete process and the obligations that you will inherit as an Australia approved sponsor.
Income Threshold of Sponsor
The new visa subclass requires a family income threshold of $83,455 per annum. The threshold is based on the income of the sponsor or the combined income of the sponsor and their spouse/partner and/or another child of the parent.
Length of Stay
This visa allows parents to remain in Australia whilst holding this visa for up to five years continuously and up to a cumulative maximum of ten years. It is not a permanent visa and does not lead to permanent residency.
Work Rights
The visa holder will be subject to “no work” condition. Which means you will not be able to work whilst in Australia.
